You want your loved one comfortable, well cared for and living with the best quality of life possible for them. This is not available in most long-term care facilities and with most home health care providers.
The demand for nurses is constant, urgent, and growing and there are simply not enough skilled applicants for the positions. This means the most skilled and highly trained nurses do not need to work for nursing facilities where their caseloads are thirty patients per caregiver and they are incapable of providing proper care to the patients they are charged with.
Caregiver-to-patient ratios as high as 30:1 are common in long-term care units. This is in large part due to how these facilities charge and are paid for services. These facilities cater to Medicaid and Medicare patients. And these state and federal organizations will only approve a certain amount for long-term care.
This leaves the businesses incapable of hiring enough of the best and most experienced nurses.
The result: If you choose a common long-term care facility, your loved one may be forced to wait their turn when it comes to basic needs like assistance with using the restroom, keeping themselves clean or getting a drink of water. There is no comfort, dignity, or grace in this.
Home health agencies that work with Medicare and Medicaid cannot sustain experienced and highly trained skilled nurses to provide in-home health care.
Home care services that work with Medicare and Medicaid face the same problem when it comes to having the best medical professionals to aid with patient care. This means the level of care you get with most home care agencies will not be at the standard you want for your loved one. Often these services are carried out by poorly trained men and women who make minimum wage and offer minimum effort when it comes to caring for your loved one.
Also, Medicaid is only willing to pay for a set number of hours per week for assistance with living. What happens after hours? There are 168 hours in a week. If Medicaid only covers 40 hours, this leaves you responsible for taking care of your loved one’s care the additional 128 hours in the week. Your loved one needs and deserves more than the bare minimum Medicaid home health facilities can provide.
Medicare will not approve home aide for home care.
Medicare will only approve care if a SKILLED Nurse is required. If your loved one needs skilled nursing services in their home; they still must apply for these services and be evaluated by a Medicare Examiner. The sad truth is that many claimants are completely denied in-home skilled nursing care when they apply for these benefits. And Medicare will not even consider paying for needed home care performed by an aide.
